The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), is the first fully integrated Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) healthcare facility in the United States. The FHCC provides care for a robust patient population including military veterans, retirees, active duty military personnel, United States Navy recruits and military dependents. The main campus is located in North Chicago, Illinois, and houses the primary outpatient, inpatient, nursing home and domiciliary facilities. The medical center has an emergency department, 30 bed inpatient medical-surgical unit, 10 bed intensive care unit, and 136 bed nursing home with a short-term rehabilitation unit. The FHCC also manages Branch Health Clinics on Naval Recruit Training Command and Naval Station Great Lakes, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Evanston, IL, McHenry, IL, and Kenosha, WI. The FHCC PM&R Department specializes in both the inpatient and outpatient management of patients with neuromuscular disorders. The Department has an active electromyography lab and the latest neuromuscular ultrasound equipment. The Department also has a dedicated Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) specialty clini...c and conducts research in areas of TBI and physical rehabilitation. The FHCC has an expanding research department. As of November 2017, there are 13 funded ongoing studies at the FHCC and 58 active IRB approved studies overall. The FHCC is adjacent to and has a strong affiliation with Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), which is the home to CMS. The majority of providers and researchers at the FHCC are faculty members of RFUMS/CMS. There are multiple active collaborative research projects between the institutions. In November 2017, RFUMS broke ground for the construction of a new research park adjacent to the FHCC. The VA Advanced Research Fellow will have access to resources of both facilities including the many educational offerings provided by the VA and the University.
