INTERVENTIONAL PSYCHIATRY FELLOWSHIP:

The Interventional Psychiatry Fellowship at Emory University/Emory Healthcare consists of a year-long advanced clinical and academic experience in the management of treatment resistant and complex psychiatric disorders with a range of advanced therapies. Fellows will receive direct supervision from experienced faculty members, researchers, and leaders in the field of Interventional Psychiatry. Interventional psychiatry is a growing field that involves invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation technologies as well as novel pharmacological approaches.

Fellowship applicants must have satisfactorily completed an ACGME-accredited General Psychiatry residency prior to entering the program. The candidate will be board certified/eligible at the time of application. A strong applicant will have an interest in both patient care and clinical research.

The fellowship encompasses four areas of emphasis:

Clinical experience-

The Fellow will join the faculty at the rank of Clinical Instructor. The Fellow will gain proficiency in evaluating patients for interventional psychiatric treatments through inpatient and outpatient clinical consultations performed under mentored supervision. The Fellow will attain practical experience in recommending treatments for patients as well as pre- and post-treatment management. Fellows will also receive hands-on instruction delivering advanced pharmacological and neuromodulation-based therapies including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT); ketamine and esketamine treatments; transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS); vagus nerve stimulation (VNS); and deep brain stimulation (DBS). Training within our high-volume, high-acuity clinical service affords both breadth and depth of experience with these therapies.

Didactic learning experience-

The Fellow will participate in didactics and organize monthly journal clubs, expanding their knowledge base and command of advanced topics in Interventional Psychiatry.

Teaching-

The Fellow will have the opportunity to educate medical students, residents and visiting physicians in the theoretical and practical aspects of interventional psychiatry. Teaching will include delivering formal lectures, leading group discussions, and presenting at case conference.

Research-

The Fellow will participate in ongoing clinical research studies. Emory Interventional Psychiatry participates in both federal and industry-sponsored trials. Fellows are encouraged to develop their own research interest and will be supported by mentors. This may lead to presentations at national meetings and publication of manuscripts related to research efforts.
