Dr. Bethany Caruso and Dr. Sheela Sinharoy's research group in the Hubert Department of Global Health (HDGH) at Emory University is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team. This position is a full-time fellowship that will become available upon identification of a qualified candidate. The position will be available for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of continuation for a second year. The position is located in Atlanta, GA with the option to work remotely.

Our group carries out research on gender and environmental health, particularly water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and menstrual health and hygiene (MHH). We use qualitative and quantitative methods to study empowerment as it relates to WASH and lead efforts to validate measures and identify indicators to assess gender and WASH in partnership with the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work primarily on the Measuring Urban Sanitation & Empowerment (MUSE) project, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. MUSE is a mixed-methods, multi-phase study that is developing and validating scales to measure empowerment as it relates to sanitation in urban environments. Data have been collected in partnership with Athena Infonomics and local organizations in Kampala (Uganda), Lusaka (Zambia), and Tiruchirappalli, Narsapur, and Warangal (India), Dakar (Senegal) and Meherpur and Saidpur (Bangladesh). Additionally, there may be opportunities for the Postdoctoral Fellow to analyze data on menstruation in the workplace that was collected in late 2021, and to support intervention design and evaluation as part of a multi-year learning partnership under development focused on WASH and women's empowerment across four countries, including two in Africa and two in Central America.

The successful candidate will participate on externally funded research projects in Africa, South Asia, and potentially Central America, and will have a portion of protected time to develop manuscripts and research proposals as a lead or collaborator. The Postdoctoral Fellow also may have access to data archives associated with this research group to conduct collaborative analyses of mutual interest. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be encouraged to participate in the intellectual life of the school and university, for example by attending seminars, giving guest lectures, and co-mentoring masters students and/or PhD students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Applicants must have a Ph.D. in public health or other relevant fields. Strong skills in quantitative analysis, and the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with colleagues at Emory and partner organizations are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and peer-reviewed publications with: quantitative analysis methods (e.g. linear and logistic regressions, structural equation modeling, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and item response theory methods); intervention design; and program evaluation. Broadly, responsibilities will include analyzing quantitative (survey) data; preparing manuscripts, reports, and proposals; providing technical assistance and guidance to partners in the field; and general project management, coordination, and supervision of students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
