The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service staff physiatrist reports to the Service Chief of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service. A staff physiatrist routinely performs inpatient and outpatient musculoskeletal and neuromuscular examinations, electrodiagnostic testing, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound evaluations, perform peripheral joint and axial spine injections, determines diagnoses, and initiates treatments that emphasize restoration of function. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board certified. Different patient populations requiring comprehensive rehabilitation programs include those with cancer, amputations, spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal (including acute and chronic pain conditions) and neuromuscular impairments requiring PMRs related measures and interventions. The cancer rehabilitation physiatrist will evaluate and manage cancer patients and develop a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to address needs. Incumbent will also be part of an interdisciplinary cancer survivorship program. Additional responsibilities of the physiatrist in this position will include supervision of residents. Physiatrist will need to have 3 years of experience as faculty in gradual medical education so they can be assistant program director or program director of the residency program. Training in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound would be desirable but not required. This position is for a cancer rehabilitation physiatrist with interest in GME leadership. Incumbent reports to the Chief of PM&RS Service. In partnership with the Chief of PM&Rs service and PM&Rs Administrative officer, based on PMRs Service/PVAHCS needs and clinical training, incumbent may be assigned to additional duties in PM&R EMG clinic, musculoskeletal rehab clinic, Power wheelchair clinic, Community Living Center (CLC) and inpatient consults to provide a continuum of rehabilitation services for the Phoenix VA Health Care system. Duties and responsibilities are but not limited to: Prescribes, coordinates, monitors and has the working knowledge of rehab activities of other Rehab Medicine Service therapy providers including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Kinesiotherapy, Recreational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology, Social Work, Psychology and Rehabilitation Nursing Care. Accessible and available to personnel in the PM&Rs Service/CLC PMRs rehab program for clinical oversight as needed. Responsible for integrating the core values and mission into the rehabilitation process. Assists the Chief of PM&R in the performance of the PM&Rs programs in the areas of: Resource Utilization Accomplishment of local, VISN and national goals. Patient Safety Participates in administrative and quality improvement activities. He/she assists administration and other staff in policy development and compliance with Joint Commission (JC), and other applicable local and national standards. The physiatrist serves on committees as assigned by the Chief of PM&Rs and Medical Center management. Collaborates with the Chief of PMRs, other staff physiatrists, therapy clinical manager, therapy section chiefs and PMRs administrative officer for: Access to care for people with activity limitations, hearing/speech limitations, and participation restrictions. Provision of care that demonstrates value for people with activity limitations, hearing/speech limitations, and participation restrictions. Removal of architectural, environmental, attitudinal, financial, communication, employment, transportation and other barriers to people with disabilities. Participates, oversees and collaborates to ensure that all applicable clinical functions and responsibilities as assigned by Chief PM&Rs to this position run efficiently. Provides timely and courteous service to all veterans seeking rehabilitative care and endure that results of tests are made easily available to the referring practitioners in a timely manner. Collaborates to ensure coverage when necessary in other rehab clinical areas when requested by Chief of PMRs. Collaborates with other rehab physicians to ensure proper education of medical students and residents and therapy sections as required. Attends and provides input, as appropriate, to the PM&Rs management and other committees and councils, as needed. Attends regularly scheduled PM&Rs staff meetings and other clinical and administrative staff meetings as may be required or directed by the Chief of the PMRs Service.
