The Women's Health Medical Director (WHMD) will clinically lead the Women's Health Program of the Hampton VAMC, affiliated clinics and be a direct care provider for Women Veterans in Primary Care. Several years' experience in primary care with strong experience in women's health is preferred. The WHMD will supervise and provide oversite over women's health. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified, Completion of resident training program in Internal Medicine. Preferred Experience: Previous program manager and/or women's health experience preferred, and several years primary care experience. The physician will demonstrate proficiency in practice, managing a complex ambulatory care site with the focus on Women's Health and strategic planning. The staff physician will assist the Women Veterans developing/design of gender-specific health care needs and advocate with Chief, of Primary Care with recruitment of Women's Health Providers. Clinical Responsibilities of the Hampton Women Veterans Program Director are, but not limited to: Leads the Women's Health clinical team utilizing current clinical practice standards, licensure, knowledge, skills, and experience. Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care for Women's Health. Counsels Women Veterans and their families on matters relating to health and wellness, illness, disease processes, medication and treatment options based on Veterans desired health care outcomes. Provide a full range of therapeutic interventions in units/programs in the Hampton VA Medical Center to which they are assigned and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management. Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care for Women Veterans. Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. Ensure the practice of medicine is consistent with the Joint Commission, Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), VA policies and procedures, clinical · practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statues and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Chief of Primary Care Services. Involved in performance improvement and quality assurance initiatives. Identifies opportunities for process/system improvements, collaborates with leadership in developing work groups and implementation or communication strategies as it pertains to the Women Veterans Health Program. Provides leadership guidance and consultation to staff on Women's Health. Involved in the supervision and teaching of staff and other trainees assigned. Consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in implementation of treatment plan for Women Veterans. Responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the Medical Center or healthcare system, as appropriate. Plans and oversees the completion of personal research programs, designed to provide information regarding Women Veteran's Program planning and relevant treatment approaches.
