Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is seeking board certified applicants with broad clinical experience and machine learning/personalized medicine/radiomics research interests for a faculty position in proton therapy in the Division of Medical Physics, Department of Radiation Oncology.

Radiation Oncology has a rich tradition of collaborating with other Mayo Clinic departments, health and data scientists, biomedical engineering programs, and animal and cell laboratories. Resources to support radiomics investigations include a clinical data warehouse containing over twenty years of EHR data for 9.8 million patients, a vibrant radiology practice with state-of-the- art imaging modalities, and reference labs including pathology, genomic data, and drug discovery pipelines.
Responsibilities: Candidates will have a track record that demonstrates academic and clinical productivity in medical physics, including clinical practice and project management, research achievement and educational excellence. The incumbent must have a broad clinical skill set including spot scanning proton beam therapy. The physics faculty all participate in the clinical practice as well as the medical physics educational programs (Ph.D. and residency) through the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. The Medical Physics Division is noted for research in image guided and image based radiation therapy, treatment dosimetry and verification, novel treatment technologies and advances in brachytherapy, Monte Carlo techniques, particle beam therapy and informatics.
Equipment in the Department includes 12 Varian Truebeam/EX linacs, a Gamma Knife Perfexion, GE and Siemens CT simulators with wide bore and 4D capability, a 3T MRI, two VariSource and one Bravos HDR afterloaders, Eclipse, ARIA and a full complement of dosimetry and detector systems for photon, proton and brachytherapy. Treatment procedures include all conventional radiation therapy plus specials that include IORT, TBI, TSET, HDR, SRS, SBRT, BH, Orthovoltage and LDR. The proton center contains a Hitachi, synchrotron based 4 half-gantry plus single fixed beam treatment system, treating over 1100 patients per year within an approximately 100,000 square foot facility adjacent to our existing radiation oncology department. The proton beam is 100% spot scanning with orthogonal kV-based imaging, Siemens CT-on-rails and VisionRT for localization and verification.
Successful candidates will have responsibility for and participate in all aspects of procedure and QA development and coverage for proton therapy and conventional radiation therapy.
The applicant will also be expected to submit a brief (<1000 words) research proposal. The research proposal should summarize the candidate’s research interests, goals, qualifications, potential for funding, and vision for synergistic collaboration with the other members of the Department of Radiation Oncology. Preference will be given to those candidates who have interests and qualifications in machine learning, artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, and/or radiomics.
The Medical Physics Division currently has 18 faculty physicists, 24 staff medical physicists, 7 residents/fellows, 3 medical physicist assistants, engineers and IT support. The Division is a seasoned and cohesive team responsible for all aspects of therapy physics in support of clinical practice, education and research in radiation oncology in Rochester and at 5 satellite facilities. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. and board certification? board eligible Ph.D. graduates from a CAMPEP accredited residency program with experience in spot-scanning proton/particle therapy will also be considered.
