Brain Injury Leadership Position, Medical Director
Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital houses a 33-bed, private room, inpatient rehabilitation facility, Carilion Inpatient Rehabilitation (IPR), to serve the rehabilitation needs of the communities in Southwest Virginia and surrounding states. Referrals to the inpatient rehabilitation program are received from Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, a tertiary care, 700 bed academic Level 1 Trauma Center; several Carilion Clinic community-based hospitals; and other critical access hospitals. There are over 3000 annual emergency department visits for patients with brain trauma. Traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury diagnoses make up 40% of the admissions to the Carilion IPR. These patients are referred largely from trauma and neurosurgery services and include patients who have moderate to severe brain trauma and/or intracerebral injury from non-traumatic causes (e.g. tumors, aneurysmal bleeds); most have undergone craniotomy intervention. Of note, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion (FBRI at VTC) has recently been awarded a grant to further develop and commercialize a multi-modality system approach to aid in the diagnosis and management of mild traumatic brain injury via point of care testing and serum biomarkers. The FBRI will serve as the first anchor research and demonstration site.
This fellowship-trained, specialty physician will serve as the PM&R Brain Injury and IPR Program Director. S/he will focus on development of the traumatic brain injury continuum of care across the diagnostic spectrum of concussion to severe brain injury. S/he will collaborate closely with the PM&R section chief, experienced senior nurse leaders, and therapy directors. S/he will be responsible for developing and directing inpatient rehabilitation processes to facilitate exceptional rehabilitation care and outcomes.
In addition to program development, clinical work will include consultations for brain injury patients with the trauma and neurosurgery services at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (our main acute care hospital), managing care for patients admitted to Carilion IPR with brain injury, and providing ambulatory follow up and consultations for discharged patients and patients with mild injuries who are not hospitalized. S/he will coordinate and/or manage the rehab care for patients enrolled in the research site. The clinical work is in partnership with PM&R department colleagues experienced in traumatic brain injury including physiatrists, neuropsychologists, and several advanced care providers within the department.
As appropriate, the candidate will receive an academic appointment in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) and will have the opportunity to be involved in teaching residents and students in the Graduate Medical Education programs and ancillary medical professions.
