Spinal Cord Injury Fellowship
Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University
Spinal Cord Injury Fellowship
This 12-month program provides exceptional access to the knowledge base for Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders care. Focus is placed on clinical and academic excellence with protected research/elective time to encourage exploration and personal growth. Fellows benefit from the breadth and depth of the Jefferson Health System, with a level 1 trauma center in Philadelphia, and a NIDILRR funded SCI Model System Center. The Delaware Valley Model SCI system is a longstanding center for the care of SCI, MS and ALS. We have extensive opportunities for education and a breadth of exposure that is hard to match. From our “cord alert” system that engages SCI physicians very early in the care continuum, to our SCI Medical Home at Magee Rehabilitation you will be exposed to the full continuum of care with a host of well-respected and seasoned SCI physicians, Neurosurgeons, Hand surgeons, Urologists, Therapists, Nurses, and Researchers.
The Department of Neurosurgery is our partner in this educational endeavor and they will be directly involved in the fellows learning experience. We also have access to the resources and researchers in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, many of whom are well known in SCI research. The list of reasons that Jefferson is an amazing choice is too long to list here! If you chose us for your continuing SCI education, you can expect broad access in nearly all realms of SCI research and care.
Our faculty give the fellow intimate access to the subspecialty care required for patients with paralysis, including neuro-urology, ventilator management, functional orthopedics, spasticity management and many more. Core clinical experiences include consultation of acute injuries, acute rehabilitation including advanced wound care, and ventilator management. You will also learn spasticity management including intrathecal pumps. We have specialists in tendon and nerve transfer surgery, functional electrical stimulation and chronic medical management. Fellows will participate in a continuity clinic and have regular didactics. Fellows are encouraged to present at local and national conferences. Funding is available to support attendance at national meetings and conduct research. Fellows are mentored to grow as medical educators. Currently one fellow position is offered.
