Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship
The MetroHealth System
The 12-month program provides unique training. Focus is placed on clinical and academic excellence with protected research/elective time to encourage exploration and personal growth. Fellows benefit from three diverse healthcare systems. The MetroHealth System is a level 1 trauma center and a NIDILRR funded SCI Model System Center. The Northeast Ohio VA Healthcare System is a center for SCI, MS and ALS. The world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation exposes fellows to subspecialty care including neuro-urology, spasticity management and neurosurgery. Core clinical experiences include consultation of acute injuries, acute rehabilitation and chronic medical management. Fellows maintain a weekly continuity clinic and have regular didactics. Other opportunities include advanced wound care, intrathecal pump management, tendon and nerve transfer surgery, functional electrical stimulation and ventilator management. Fellows are encouraged to present at local and national conferences and are mentored to grow as medical educators. Faculty includes six SCIM-certified physicians in addition to other national respected clinicians and therapists. Two fellow positions are offered. Funding is available to support attendance at national meetings and basic research.

The MetroHealth System and Case Western Reserve University The MetroHealth System includes a 450-bed mission-driven academic medical center and is a federally designated Spinal Cord Injury Model System, a Level I Trauma and Burn Center, a Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Magnet certified. The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute is the only rehabilitation institute in the world led by two members of the National Academies, John Chae, MD of the National Academy of Medicine and P. Hunter Peckham, PhD of the National Academy of Engineering. The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute includes a free-standing rehabilitation hospital featuring CARF-accredited inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, as well as extensive outpatient facilities on the main campus and multiple community-based satellites. Our 67 acute inpatient rehabilitation beds are divided into distinct units for spinal cord injury, brain injury and stroke. Academically, The MetroHealth has been affiliated with the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine since 1914. The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is a research-intensive institution renowned for its innovation in medical education and pioneering research. The department of PM&R within the MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute serves as the academic department of PM&R for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. ACGME training programs include a PM&R residency program and Brain Injury, Pain, and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowships. The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute has over $50 million in extramural research funding and is internationally renowned for its basic and clinical research in the application of electrical stimulation for the treatment of central nervous system paralysis and musculoskeletal pain. The department of PM&R is presently ranked number 2 in the nation in NIH funding among PM&R departments in US Medical Schools (Blue Ride Institute for Medical Research, Feb, 2019).
