About Atrium Health
Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), one of the leading healthcare organizations in the Southeast and one of the largest public, not-for-profit systems in the nation.
CHS operates more than 30 affiliated hospitals in North and South Carolina, directly employs more than 1,700 physicians, and serves patients at more than 600 care locations including physician practices, freestanding emergency departments, outpatient surgery centers, pharmacies, laboratories, imaging centers and other facilities. CHS also operates a large number of nursing homes and other enterprises that provide home care, medical equipment and hospice services.
Altogether, CHS operations comprise more than 6,300 licensed beds and employ more than 48,000 people, with a combined net annual operating revenue budget in excess of $6 billion.
Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) in Charlotte is one of only five Academic Medical Center Teaching Hospitals in North Carolina, and serves as the Charlotte Campus of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. In addition, CHS offers more than 25 residency and fellowship programs, based at CMC and other CHS facilities, which provide graduate-level medical education f...or more than 300 physicians in multiple specialties.
Levine Children’s Hospital, which opened in 2007 on the CMC campus, is one of the most comprehensive children’s hospitals between Atlanta and Washington D.C. It was recognized as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” by U.S. News & World Report in only its second year of operation. In addition, eight philanthropic organizations combined efforts in 2010 to support Phase I and Phase II clinical trials at the hospital’s Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center.
A significant CHS milestone occurred in 2010 when Levine Cancer Institute was formed as a result of a $20 million leadership gift from the Leon Levine Foundation. Institute funding is being used to expand treatment and research facilities in charlotte, and to enhance community-based care at CHS hospitals throughout the Carolinas. The Institute serves a catalyst to share preventive strategies and best practices throughout the entire system.
Another benefit of CHS hospital integration has been a steady expansion of networks focused on emergency care. A growing number of CHS hospitals now have nationally accredited chest pain centers, and a comprehensive stroke network was formed in 2010 with plans to add all remaining CHS hospitals in future years.
Once characteristic common to all CHS facilities is a mission that includes commitment to public service and outreach to all segments of the population. The system-wide value of CHS “community benefit,” which includes charity care, uncompensated medical services, education, research, and volunteer service by employees, totals $900 million annually.
Carolinas HealthCare System, with its extraordinary staff and broad variety of high quality and facilities, provides a medical home for everyone throughout their lifetime.
