Gillette Children's offers a comprehensive fellowship with clinical experience involving both inpatient and outpatient care that focuses entirely on children with acute and chronic disabilities. There is emphasis on research as well, and the fellow is given dedicated time to complete such. The fellow will spend about one-third of the clinical months on the inpatient unit and about two-thirds in the outpatient clinics. The inpatient unit sees a wide variety of diagnoses including the common (TBI, SCI, etc.) and less common (Hemiplegia s/p hemispherectomy, rehabilitation post selective dorsal rhizotomy, etc.) conditions. The outpatient experience includes common peds rehab diagnoses (CP, Spina bifida, etc.), multidisciplinary clinics (spasticity evaluation clinic, neuromuscular/MD clinic, brachial plexus clinic, etc.) and a fellow continuity clinic. Other clinical experiences include time spent with pediatric orthopedics, pediatric neurology, inpatient consults, clinical gait and motion analysis laboratory experience, and adult transition clinics to name a few. Procedural experience includes Botox and phenol injections under conscious sedation or general anesthesia, EMG/NCS, selective dorsal rhizotomy monitoring and intrathecal baclofen pump management. We work closely with the PM&R residency program at the Univ. of Minnesota and enjoy having residents present 12 months out of the year for teaching and learning. Medical students often rotate on our service as well and we take pride in our fellows' involvement in their learning about pediatric rehabilitation medicine.
