The MetroHealth Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio with Case Western Reserve University, The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, offers a 1-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in spinal cord injury medicine (SCIM). This fellowship program offers a unique opportunity to work in three healthcare systems, including a center with 10 previous years of experience as a federally-designated SCI Model System in the setting of a Level I Trauma Center (MetroHealth Medical Center), a designated regional SCI Center within the Veterans Health Administration, and a renowned referral and treatment center for multiple sclerosis and spinal tumors (The Cleveland Clinic Foundation). The SCIM fellow actively participates in clinical and research activities with the Cleveland FES Center, which is internationally acclaimed for pioneering research in clinical applications of functional electric stimulation for individuals with SCI.
Procedures Taught: Urodynamic testing of bladder function, ultrasound assessment of musculoskeletal problems, spasticity management with intrathecal baclofen pumps and botox injections, EMG assessment of neuromuscular problems, pressure mapping using FSA and Xsensor technology, ventilator management, use of a TOSCA Co2 monitor and a Wright's Spirometer to assess respiratory function, and familiarity with brain gait and functional electrical stimulation technology

MetroHealth Medical Center, a 450 bed tertiary care hospital affiliated with Case School of Medicine, is the regional Level I Trauma Center and features JCAHO and CARF accredited PM&R inpatient and outpatient services. PM&R is an integral member of the Trauma Team, with a major clinical and academic focus on neurologic rehabilitation. Our 68 PM&R beds are divided into distinct rehabilitation uni...ts for stroke, spinal cord injury and brain injury, with outpatient clinic facilities on campus as well as community-based satellites. The Department includes more than 30 full and part time faculty, an 18 resident training program, SCIM Fellowship, and more than 160 clinical and support staff. We feature funded research programs in functional electrical stimulation (FES), health care services/health policy research, and geriatric rehabilitation, among others.
